process

Sewing the Great Thangka, Tibet, 1993

Part of the joy of photography for me is the process, the way I learned it before all things digital. The weight of the camera, a wonder of solid metal and glass, purely mechanical. The thu-thunk of the shutter. The physics of light refracted onto metal-based film and papers and alchemy of chemicals to reveal it. The way an image emerges in the darkroom, building an understanding of composition. The choice of scale for an image, is it an intimate viewer experience held in a hand or wall sized? One by one or a series? Creating from paper, film, cameras, board and bindings. Tangible, purposeful and particular.
